With reference to my Despatch Confidential of

11th. of last January, I have the honour to transmit for your information the enclosed copy of a memorandum from the Consulate at Canton from which it will be seen that the Mint there has resumed the coinage of so-called subsidiary currency.

In my opinion this action makes more imperative the early adoption of the steps already proposed for the re- -habilitation of the currency of this Colony including the pro- -hibition of the use of foreign coins.
